Under the Catalinas, Under the Panels
Two kinds of solar panel repair come up often in Oro Valley: something has moved in under the array, or the roof below it needs attention. The town sits at about 2,620 feet with Pusch Ridge and the Santa Catalina Mountains along its eastern edge, and Catalina State Park and the Coronado National Forest form that boundary. Plenty of birds share the neighborhood, and the shaded gap between a panel and a warm roof is an appealing place to nest.
Signs something is living under there
- Twigs, feathers or droppings collecting along the lower edge of the array
- Scratching or cooing on the roof in the early morning
- Chewed or sagging wire beneath the panels
- A sudden drop in production from one section of panels
Nests trap debris against the roof, hold moisture after monsoon storms, and put wiring at risk. Droppings that wash onto the glass also cut output.
How we fit critter guards
We clear the nesting material first, check the wiring and connectors that were exposed to it, and clean the area. Then we install a mesh barrier around the perimeter of the array, fastened to the panel frames with clips made for the purpose, not drilled into the roof. Done properly, the guard keeps animals out without adding new roof penetrations.
Roof work and a panel removal
Much of Oro Valley's housing went up during a fast stretch in the 1990s, when the town was the fastest-growing municipality in Arizona for several years. The Golf Club at Vistoso opened in 1995 and The Views Golf Club followed in 1997. Homes from that era are reaching the age when underlayment and flashing need work. If a roofer has to get under your array, the panels have to come off first. We label every module and string, disconnect and store the equipment, then reinstall and recommission the system after the roof is done, with fresh flashing at each mount.
Earlier neighborhoods, older systems
Oro Valley was incorporated in 1974, but suburban building started well before that. Campo Bello began construction in 1948 and Suffolk Hills went up from 1960 to 1962. Solar on these homes is often a later addition, sometimes installed over an older roof. Those systems deserve a close look at mounts and conduit runs, since they were fitted to a roof that has been through decades of desert sun.
Slightly cooler, still hot
Oro Valley's average temperature runs slightly cooler than Tucson's because of its higher elevation. That helps panel efficiency a bit, but inverters in a garage or on a west wall still bake in summer. We check ventilation and clearances around the inverter whenever we are on site. Oro Valley Questions
Will critter guards damage my roof or panels?
They should not. The mesh attaches to the panel frames with clips, so no new holes go into the roof. We also leave enough room for airflow under the array.
Who handles permits in Oro Valley?
The Town of Oro Valley handles residential permits through its online customer portal. If your repair or reinstall needs one, we tell you up front and include it in the scope.
Can my roofer just move the panels themselves?
Some do, but disconnecting and recommissioning a grid-tied system is electrical work. Having a solar company handle it keeps the wiring, labeling and roof attachments right.
