When the Roof Needs Work and the Panels Are in the Way
Solar Panel Removal & Reinstall comes up whenever the roof under an array needs attention: a full reroof, a new elastomeric coating on a flat roof, broken tiles, or a leak around a mount. A roofer cannot do proper work around panels that are still bolted down and wired up. The array has to come off, wait somewhere safe and then go back on with every roof penetration sealed again.
Flat roofs
Tucson has flat roofs of every age, from older Pueblo Revival and adobe homes with parapet walls to newer houses with coated decks. Their coatings and membranes have a service life, and many owners recoat on a schedule. Panels on flat roofs usually sit on tilted racks, either attached through the roof or weighted with ballast blocks. Through-roof attachments need careful sealing when they go back down. Ballasted racks avoid penetrations but put weight on the roof, and the blocks have to be moved and returned in the right places.
Tile and shingle roofs
Concrete tile is a common choice on pitched roofs in the desert Southwest. Tiles crack when someone steps in the wrong spot, and each mount sits on a flashing under the tile course. When a tile roof is redone, the underlayment usually gets replaced while the tiles may be reused, so the timing between us and your roofer matters. On shingle roofs, the mounts are flashed and sealed into the new shingles as they go down.
How the timing works with your roofer
We come out before the roof job to document the system: photos, production readings, panel layout and serial numbers. Then we shut the system down, disconnect and label the wiring, and take down the panels and rails. Panels are stored on site or off site, depending on what you prefer and how much room there is. Your roofer does their work, and we coordinate with them on where the new mounts go. Once the roof is ready, we reinstall the racking, flash and seal every attachment, put the panels back, reconnect the wiring and test the system.
What to sort out before you sign a roofing contract
- Ask your roofer whether panel removal is included or whether you need to hire it separately.
- Find out who is responsible for leaks at the solar mounts after the job.
- Check whether your panel or inverter warranty requires a particular kind of company to handle the equipment.
- If the panels are leased, contact the leasing company first. Most leases spell out who may move the system.
- Plan for the downtime. The system makes nothing while it is off the roof.
Permits and the utility
A straight remove-and-reinstall with the same equipment usually does not change your interconnection. If you take the chance to add panels or swap the inverter, TEP requires a new application and Permission to Operate before the system is switched back on. Tucson, Oro Valley, Marana and Sahuarita are incorporated, so permits generally go through the city or town, and unincorporated areas generally go through Pima County. We check what applies to your address and put those steps on the quote.
What a Removal and Reinstall Includes
Each step is listed on your quote so you can compare it against your roofer's schedule.
Pre-removal check
Photos, production readings and a test of every panel so pre-existing problems are on record.
Safe shutdown and disconnect
System shut down at the inverter and disconnects, wiring labeled for reassembly.
Panel and racking removal
Panels, rails and, on flat roofs, ballast blocks taken down without damaging the roof or tiles.
Storage
Panels kept flat and protected on site or off site while the roof is replaced.
Mount flashing and sealing
New or reused attachments flashed and sealed into the new roof surface.
Reinstall and test
Panels back in place, wiring reconnected and output checked against the readings taken before removal.

Typical Panel Removal & Reinstall Costs
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Panel removal only: unhook and take down (Fixr) | $300 to $500 |
| Moving panels (Fixr) | $600 to $1,000 |
| Removal, per panel (HomeGuide) | $200 to $500 |
| Removal, 20-panel system (HomeGuide) | $4,000 to $10,000 |
National ranges from Fixr and HomeGuide. Sources measure this job differently, which is why the figures spread so widely. Your cost depends on the number of panels, roof type, storage, mount flashing and whether any equipment changes. Your written estimate is the price.
From Removal to Reinstall
1. Plan with your roofer
We set dates around the roofing schedule and agree on who handles what.
2. Document and remove
Readings and photos first, then a safe shutdown, labeled wiring and careful removal.
3. Store
Panels and hardware are kept protected until the new roof is finished.
4. Reinstall and seal
Racking goes back on with every attachment flashed and sealed into the new roof.
5. Test and restart
We reconnect, confirm output matches the earlier readings and handle any utility steps.

Solar Panel Removal & Reinstall Questions
Should I reroof before going solar or after?
If your roof is close to the end of its life, it is cheaper to replace it before panels go up. If you already have solar, plan the reroof with removal and reinstall built into the budget and the schedule.
How long will my system be off?
As long as the roof work takes, plus a day or two on each end for removal and reinstall. A flat-roof recoat can be quick, while a full tile reroof takes longer. We give you dates that match your roofer's schedule.
Will removing the panels void my warranty?
Manufacturers set their own rules, and some require that their equipment be handled by particular installers. We check your panel and inverter warranty terms before we start and tell you what we find.
Can you add panels while they are off the roof?
Yes, but adding panels or an inverter means a new TEP application and Permission to Operate before restart, and often a permit. We plan the timeline around those steps.
Do flat roofs in Tucson need different mounts?
Flat roofs usually use tilted racks, either attached through the roof and sealed or held with ballast blocks. Which one works depends on the roof structure and coating. We match what is there or explain why a change is needed.
