Keeping Birds and Rodents Out From Under the Panels
Critter Guards close the gap between your solar panels and the roof so birds and rodents cannot move in. To a pigeon in Tucson, the space under an array is ideal: shaded from the summer sun, protected from wind and hawks, and close to food. Once one pair nests there, more tend to follow, and the problem grows every season.
What nesting does to a solar system
- Droppings and debris. Nesting material and droppings pile up on the roof, trap moisture, stain the surface and can clog roof drains and scuppers on flat roofs.
- Chewed wiring. Rodents and squirrels chew on cable insulation. HomeGuide lists repairs for loose or chewed wiring at $100 to $400, and damaged wiring can cause faults and lost production.
- Blocked airflow. Panels and microinverters shed heat from their backs. Packed nesting material under them traps heat, which costs output in a climate that is already hard on electronics.
- Noise and mess. Cooing at dawn, feathers on the patio and droppings on walkways and windows.
How critter guards work
A guard is a galvanized or coated wire mesh that runs around the outside edge of the array, closing the gap between the panel frames and the roof surface. It attaches to the panel frames with clips made for the job, so nothing is drilled into the panels and the roof is not penetrated. Done properly, it is tight to the roof, trimmed neatly, and still lets air move and water drain.
Why the cleanout matters
Putting mesh around an active nest just traps birds or eggs inside, or leaves the debris to rot. So the job starts with clearing everything out from under the panels: nests, droppings, leaves and anything else that has collected. While the space is open, we inspect the wiring and connectors for chew damage and loose clips and check the roof surface and mounts. Any damage we find goes on the quote before we close things up.
Flat roofs and tile roofs
On a flat roof with tilted racks, the open space under the high side of each row is large, and the mesh has to follow the rack shape. On pitched tile roofs, the gap varies with the tile profile, and the mesh has to follow the curves to leave no openings. Either way, roof drains and scuppers have to stay clear so the monsoon rain can run off.
What it does not fix
Guards keep critters from getting under the array. They do not stop birds from sitting on top of panels or on the roof ridge. If droppings on the glass are the main issue, cleaning is part of the answer. And if bees, rats or other pests have settled somewhere other than the solar array, a pest control company is the right call.
What a Critter Guard Job Includes
The mesh is the last step. Everything before it is about making sure the space underneath is clean and undamaged.
Nest and debris removal
Clearing nests, droppings and debris from under every panel and off the roof surface.
Wiring inspection
Checking cables and connectors for chew damage, sagging wires and loose clips while the space is open.
Roof and drain check
Looking at the roof surface, mounts, drains and scuppers that nesting may have blocked.
Mesh installation
Mesh cut to fit and clipped to the panel frames around the full perimeter, with no drilling into panels.
Panel rinse
Optional cleaning of droppings and dust from the glass at the same visit.

Typical Critter Guard Related Costs
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Bird mesh kit, materials only, DIY (Fixr) | $60 to $200 |
| Loose or chewed wiring repair (HomeGuide) | $100 to $400 |
| Obstruction or debris removal (HomeGuide) | $75 to $850 |
National ranges from Fixr and HomeGuide; the cost guides we used do not list a figure for professional critter guard installation, so that price comes from your quote. It depends on the length of the array perimeter, how much cleanout is needed, roof type and any wiring repairs. Your written estimate is the price.
How a Critter Guard Job Goes
1. Look and measure
We check how many panels and edges need mesh, how much nesting is underneath and whether wiring is damaged.
2. Clean out
Nests, droppings and debris are removed from under the array and off the roof.
3. Repair
Any chewed wiring or loose connectors you approved are fixed.
4. Install mesh
Mesh is fitted and clipped around the full perimeter, tight to the roof.

Critter Guards Questions
Why do pigeons nest under solar panels?
The space under an array is shaded, dry and protected from wind and predators. For a pigeon, it is a ready-made shelter, especially in a hot climate like Tucson's.
Will critter guards damage my panels or void the warranty?
A proper guard clips to the panel frames without drilling into the panels or the roof. If you are unsure about your specific warranty terms, we can look them over with you before the install.
Can I just remove the nests myself?
Removing nests means working on a roof, around live wiring and in bird droppings, which carry health risks. And without mesh, the birds usually come back quickly. It is a job worth leaving to someone with the right equipment.
Do critter guards affect panel cooling?
Open mesh lets air flow under the panels. What hurts cooling is the nesting material that piles up when there is no guard.
Can you remove the guards later for roof work?
Yes. The clips come off when the panels need to come down for a reroof or repair, and the mesh can be put back or replaced afterward.
