The Part That Works Hardest in Tucson Heat
Inverter Repair & Replacement is one of the most common solar repairs in Tucson, since the inverter is often the real culprit when production drops. Panels make direct current; the inverter turns it into the alternating current your house and the grid use. It runs every sunny day, it handles all of the system's power, and in a typical home it hangs on an exterior wall or sits under the array where summer heat bakes it. When it fails, production does not just slip. It often stops.
Why inverters fail
Most inverters rely on electrolytic capacitors, and those parts have a life expectancy on the order of a decade, shorter when they run hot. Tucson's average daily highs top 100 degrees in June and July, and an inverter on a south or west wall in direct sun runs hotter still. Fans in larger units pull in dust, and dust is everywhere here between monsoon storms. Voltage surges, loose connections and plain age account for much of the rest.
Which kind do you have?
- String inverter. One box, usually on a wall near the electric meter, with panels wired to it in series. If it fails, the whole system stops. Warranties are often 5 to 10 years, so many older Tucson systems are past coverage.
- Microinverters. A small inverter under each panel on the roof. One failure takes out a single panel, not the whole array, and warranties typically run 15 to 25 years. The catch is that every replacement means a trip onto the roof and, often, lifting the panel.
- Power optimizers. A box under each panel that tunes its output, plus a central inverter on the wall that still does the conversion. Faults can sit in either place.
Repair or replace?
Some problems are fixable without new hardware: a tripped breaker or disconnect, a loose or corroded connection, a communication fault, a firmware issue or a failed fan. Others mean the unit has reached the end of its life. When a string inverter is past warranty, we lay out what a replacement costs and whether a newer unit, or a switch to microinverters or optimizers, makes sense for your roof and shading. If the unit is still under warranty, we gather the serial numbers and error logs and help you file the claim. Manufacturer warranties often cover the part but not the labor to swap it, so ask about both.
Utility paperwork
TEP says a new interconnection application is required if you add panels or another inverter, and the system must wait for Permission to Operate before it is turned back on. A same-size, like-for-like swap is usually simpler, but we confirm what your utility and permit office need before the old unit comes off the wall. Trico members follow Trico's own process. Either way, those steps are on your schedule and your quote.
Protecting the new unit
Where the layout allows, a replacement inverter can go in a shadier spot, on a north-facing wall, under an eave or in a carport, which helps keep it cooler through the summer. We also check that the disconnects, breaker and conduit are in good shape, because a new inverter on old, sun-cracked wiring is a repeat call waiting to happen.
What Inverter Work Covers
Each inverter job starts with finding the actual fault, then fixing the smallest thing that solves it.
Fault and error code diagnosis
Reading the inverter display, logs and monitoring history to see what tripped and when.
String inverter replacement
Removing the failed wall unit and installing a compatible model, with disconnects and breaker checked.
Microinverter replacement
Finding the dead unit on the roof, lifting the panel and swapping the microinverter underneath.
Optimizer troubleshooting
Testing panel-level optimizers and the central inverter to find which part is dropping output.
Warranty claims
Collecting serial numbers, photos and error logs for the manufacturer's claim process.
Monitoring reconnection
Getting the gateway or inverter back on your home Wi-Fi so the app reports again.

Typical Inverter Repair & Replacement Costs
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Inverter repair (Fixr) | $500 to $3,000 |
| Inverter replacement (Fixr) | $1,000 to $3,000 |
| Inverter replacement (HomeGuide) | $1,500 to $3,000 |
| Inverter not communicating, labor included (Fixr) | $500 to $3,000 |
National ranges from Fixr and HomeGuide cost guides. Ranges vary with the inverter type and size, warranty coverage, roof access for microinverters and any utility or permit steps. Your written estimate is the price.
How Inverter Work Goes
1. Send us the basics
Inverter brand, a photo of the label or error, and screenshots of your monitoring app.
2. Test on site
We check the inverter, breakers, disconnects and wiring, and confirm whether the fault is the unit or something upstream.
3. Quote and warranty check
You get a written price. If the part is covered, we start the warranty claim first.
4. Repair or swap
We fix or replace the unit, file any utility or permit paperwork the change requires, and wait for approval before switching on.
5. Confirm production
We check output on your monitoring and walk you through the new equipment.

Inverter Repair & Replacement Questions
How long does a solar inverter last?
String inverters commonly carry 5 to 10 year warranties, and many need replacement somewhere in their second decade. Microinverters usually come with 15 to 25 year warranties. Heat shortens the life of the capacitors inside, which matters in Tucson.
My inverter has a red light. What should I do?
Write down or photograph any error code, check that the AC breaker and DC disconnect have not tripped, and do not open the unit. If a reset does not clear it, call us with the code and the brand.
Should I switch from a string inverter to microinverters?
Sometimes. Microinverters help when some panels are shaded or face different directions, and one failure only affects one panel. They cost more and put more electronics on the roof. We compare both for your roof before you decide.
Is inverter replacement covered by warranty?
If it is within the manufacturer's warranty period, the part usually is. Labor is often not covered; EnergySage notes, for example, that Enphase's warranty does not cover labor while Tesla's covers inverter labor. We check your coverage before quoting.
Do I need a permit to replace an inverter in Tucson?
It depends on the change. A different size or type of inverter can trigger both a permit and a new TEP application. We confirm with the city or county and the utility before the work and include those steps in the quote.
