Home batteries that are not behaving
Solar Battery Troubleshooting in Tucson, AZ
Most battery problems turn out to be settings, communication or a gateway fault rather than a dead battery. We find out which before anything is replaced.
- Free estimate, with the problem traced and explained before any work is priced
- Itemized written quote: parts, labor, roof work and permit fees on separate lines
- Utility paperwork and city or county permits handled where the job requires them
When Your Storage Is Not Doing Its Job
Solar Battery Troubleshooting covers home storage that is not working the way it was sold: a battery that never fills, one that empties by evening, a backup system that did nothing during an outage, or an app showing errors nobody can explain. Batteries are expensive, and replacing one should be the last step. Many of the problems we see come down to configuration, communication or the backup gateway rather than the cells themselves.
Common symptoms
- The battery charges only partway or not at all, even on clear days.
- It drains faster than expected or hits its floor before morning.
- During a TEP or Trico outage, the house went dark anyway.
- The app shows the battery offline, in standby or with an error code.
- The system shuts down or reduces output on the hottest afternoons.
Usual causes
- Operating mode. Batteries can be set for backup only, self-consumption or time-based control. A battery set to hold a full reserve for outages may never discharge in the evening, and one set for maximum self-use may be nearly empty when the power goes out.
- Gateway or transfer switch issues. Backup depends on equipment that disconnects the house from the grid during an outage. If it is not configured or wired correctly, the battery cannot carry the home.
- Communication faults. Battery, inverter and gateway need to talk to each other. A lost connection can stop charging or discharging.
- Heat. Lithium batteries manage their own temperature and can limit charging or output when they get too warm. A battery mounted on a sunny exterior wall in a Tucson summer may protect itself by throttling back.
- Backed-up loads. If the backup circuits include large loads like an air conditioner or a well pump, the battery may trip or drain quickly.
- Cell or module failure. Less common, but it happens, and it is usually a warranty matter.
How we approach it
We start with the app and settings: operating mode, reserve level, schedule and recent history. Then we look at the hardware: the gateway, the critical loads panel, communication wiring and the battery's location and temperature. Many problems get solved with a configuration change. When a component has failed, we document the error codes and serial numbers for a warranty claim, since home batteries often carry long manufacturer warranties.
Batteries and TEP
TEP's rooftop solar page notes that a system without storage produces no power during an outage, while one with a battery may still keep running, depending on how it is set up. That depends on the backup equipment working correctly. Adding storage to an existing system is a change to your interconnection, so it usually needs a new utility application and a permit. Troubleshooting a battery you already have does not, unless the fix involves new equipment.
What to expect
We tell you plainly whether the issue is a setting, a part or the battery itself. If a battery has failed outside its warranty, we lay out the replacement cost against what the battery saves you so you can decide whether to replace it or run solar alone.
What Battery Troubleshooting Covers
We check the settings, the communication, the backup equipment and the battery itself, in that order.
Settings and mode review
Backup reserve, self-consumption and schedules set to match how you actually want the battery to work.
Backup gateway testing
Checking that the system islands the house correctly when grid power drops.
Communication repair
Restoring links between the battery, inverter, gateway and monitoring.
Backup load review
Checking which circuits are backed up and whether large loads are overwhelming the battery.
Heat and placement check
Looking at whether sun exposure or poor airflow is causing thermal limits.
Warranty documentation
Error logs and serial numbers gathered for a manufacturer claim when a module fails.

Typical Solar Battery Costs
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Battery repair (Fixr) | $200 to $15,000 |
| Battery replacement (Fixr) | $2,000 to $15,000 |
| System inspection (Fixr) | $150 to $300 |
National ranges from Fixr. Battery costs vary widely with the battery brand and size, whether the fault is a setting or hardware, and warranty coverage. Your written estimate is the price.
How Battery Troubleshooting Goes
1. Share what you see
Send screenshots of the app, any error codes and what happened during the last outage.
2. Check settings and history
We review the configuration and recent charge and discharge patterns.
3. Test the hardware
Gateway, communication wiring, backed-up loads and battery condition are checked on site.
4. Fix or claim
We correct settings, repair what failed or file the warranty claim, with prices in writing first.

Solar Battery Troubleshooting Questions
Why didn't my battery power my house during an outage?
Common reasons are a battery set to a low reserve, a backup gateway fault, or a system that only backs up certain circuits. We test the backup function and the settings to find which it is.
Why does my battery stop charging on hot afternoons?
Lithium batteries limit charging when they get too warm to protect the cells. A battery in direct sun on a Tucson wall can hit those limits. Shade or better airflow may help.
Can a battery be added to my existing solar system?
Often, yes, but it is a system change. It usually requires a new TEP application and a permit, and the right battery depends on your inverter. We can look at what fits.
Is my home battery under warranty?
Many home batteries carry long manufacturer warranties, often tied to years or energy throughput. We check your model and serial number before quoting any replacement.
