Finding Out Why Your System Is Underperforming

Solar System Diagnostics is the starting point when something seems off but nobody knows what. The bill crept up. The monitoring app shows a lower number than last year. One section of panels looks weaker than the others. A diagnostic visit tests each part of the system and separates real faults from normal seasonal swings, so you only pay to fix what is broken.

Normal changes versus real faults

Not every drop is a problem. Output is lower in winter because the days are shorter and the sun sits lower. In summer, Tucson heat takes a bite: panel efficiency falls as cell temperature rises, and average highs here top 100 degrees in June and July. Monsoon season, which officially runs June 15 through September 30, adds clouds and dust. A system loses a small amount of output each year as panels age. What does not fit that pattern: a sudden drop, a section of panels that reads far below the rest, a production curve that flattens at midday, or zeros on a sunny day.

What we test

  • Monitoring data. Production history by day and month, and panel-level data if your system has microinverters or optimizers.
  • Inverter. Error logs, voltage and current readings, and whether it is limiting output because of heat.
  • Strings and panels. Voltage and current on each string, compared to what the panels are rated for in the conditions on test day.
  • Wiring and connections. Connectors, junction boxes, conduit and disconnects, including signs of heat damage, corrosion or chewed insulation.
  • Physical condition. Cracked glass, discoloration, hot spots, heavy dust, nesting under the array and loose or damaged mounts.
  • Utility meter and breaker. Making sure the system is actually feeding your panel and the meter is recording exports.

When the installer is gone

Many Tucson systems were installed by companies that have since closed or stopped servicing them. EnergySage suggests contacting the equipment manufacturer in that case, since manufacturers can point to local service companies and their warranties usually still apply. We work on these systems whatever brand is on the roof. A diagnostic is a good first step because it tells you what you have, what condition it is in and what is still under warranty.

Monitoring that went quiet

A blank app does not always mean the system stopped working. Often the gateway lost its Wi-Fi connection after a router change, an internet provider switch or a power outage. We check whether the system is still producing, reconnect the monitoring when that is the issue, and look for real faults the dark app may have been hiding.

What you get afterward

You get a written summary of what we tested, what we found and what we recommend, with a price for each repair. If the system is fine and the drop was seasonal or weather-related, we tell you that too. If a repair costs more than it will earn back, we show you the numbers so you can decide.

What a Diagnostic Visit Covers

We test the system from the panels to the meter so nothing is skipped.

Production analysis

Comparing your monitoring history with expected output for your system size and the season.

Electrical testing

String voltage and current, insulation and ground checks, and inverter readings.

Visual inspection

Glass, frames, mounts, wiring, junction boxes and the roof around the array.

Monitoring restoration

Reconnecting gateways and inverters to Wi-Fi so your app reports again.

Warranty review

Identifying equipment makes and serial numbers and checking what is still covered.

Written report

Findings and a prioritized, itemized repair quote.

How a Diagnostic Visit Goes

1. Review the data first

Send us your monitoring screenshots, equipment details and a recent bill so we know what to look for.

2. Test on site

We work through the inverter, strings, wiring, panels and meter.

3. Explain the cause

We show you what we found and whether it is a fault or a normal swing.

Solar System Diagnostics Questions

Why is my solar production lower than last year?

Common causes include a failing inverter or microinverter, dust build-up, a tripped breaker, damaged wiring, shading from new growth and nesting under the array. Weather differences between years matter too, so we compare against similar conditions before naming a cause.

How much should my system produce?

It depends on system size, panel direction and tilt, shading and the time of year. Your installer's original production estimate is a good baseline. We can compare actual output with that estimate during a diagnostic.

My monitoring app shows nothing. Is the system broken?

Not necessarily. Often the monitoring gateway lost its Wi-Fi connection. Check whether the inverter shows normal lights and your meter is recording exports. If you are not sure, we can check both.

How long does a diagnostic visit take?

Most visits take a few hours, depending on system size, roof access and how hard the fault is to find. Intermittent problems can take longer to pin down.

Can you diagnose a system someone else installed?

Yes. We work on string inverter, microinverter and optimizer systems regardless of installer, including systems whose installer is no longer in business.
